Matthew E. CoxAssociate

MATTHEW E. COX is an associate in the firm of Smith, Currie and Hancock in the Charlotte, North Carolina office. He received a B.S. in Statistics, with a minor in business, from Brigham Young University in 1996 and his J.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1999.

While at Brigham Young University , Mr. Cox was inducted into Mu Sigma Rho, the Statistical National Honor Society.  While at the University of South Carolina, Mr. Cox won the South Carolina Trial Lawyer's Association's Mock Trial Competition and represented the University of South Carolina at the Regional Competition held at Athens, Georgia in 1999. 

Although born in Radford, Virginia, Mr. Cox grew up in Roanoke, Virginia .  From 1991 to 1993, he lived in the Netherlands serving a mission for his church and still speaks fluent Dutch.  He is married with three children.  He and his family reside in Tega Cay, South Carolina.  He served on the City’s Public Works Committee from July 2006 through December 2007.   

Mr. Cox was admitted to practice in the State of South Carolina November 15, 1999.  Thereafter, he clerked for the Honorable J. Derham Cole, resident judge for the Seventh Judicial Circuit in Spartanburg, South Carolina from 1999-2000.  He entered private practice in 2000, with the law firm Gibbes Burton, LLC, then located in Greenville, South Carolina where he got his start in construction law.  In 2001, Mr. Cox joined the law firm of Johnson, Smith, Hibbard & Wildman where he continued to concentrate his practice in litigation and construction law.  

Mr. Cox joined the Charlotte office of Smith, Currie & Hancock LLP on September 1, 2005.  He sat for the February, 2006 North Carolina bar and was admitted to practice in the State of North Carolina on March 25, 2006.  He has tried numerous cases in the State and Federal Courts and has presented oral arguments before the United States Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit, in Richmond, Virginia, as well as the South Carolina Court of Appeals, in Columbia, South Carolina.

In addition to his courtroom experience, over the years, he has taught many seminars for Lorman Education Systems.  Some of the more recent seminars taught have been: AIA Contract Documents ( Charlotte, North Carolina), June 2006 & 2007; Change Orders ( Greenville, South Carolina), March 2005; Judgment Enforcement in South Carolina ( Columbia, South Carolina), March 2005; and Construction Lien Law ( Greenville, South Carolina ), December 2004.
