Aubrey L. Coleman, Jr.Senior Partner
AUBREY L. COLEMAN, JR. received his Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from Tulane University in 1964 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his L.L.B. degree from Vanderbilt University in 1967 where he was Managing Editor of the Vanderbilt Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Following graduation from law school, he practiced in Memphis, Tennessee with Burch, Porter & Johnson until he entered the Army in 1968. Mr. Coleman was a Captain in the Transportation Corps stationed at Oakland Army Base where he held a top secret security clearance. He joined Smith, Currie & Hancock in January 1970 and he is a Senior Partner in the firm. Mr. Coleman is married and has four daughters.
While with the firm, Mr. Coleman has represented general contractors, subcontractors, construction managers, owners, developers, design professionals, sureties, and design/build companies. His clients and cases have ranged from representing a design/build contractor on numerous U.S. Embassy projects to a bid protest before the GAO in Washington, D.C.; from representing a general contractor on a project in Los Alamos, New Mexico to representing a steel erector on the Frito-Lay National Headquarters in Plano, Texas; from representing a subcontractor on the LBJ Library in Austin, Texas to representing three subcontractors on a hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia; and from representing a chemical plant owner in Texas to a designer/construction administrator on a microchip facility in Idaho.
Mr. Coleman has been lead counsel in more than 75 arbitrations, bench trials, and jury trials in federal and state courts and before Boards of Contract Appeals. He has lectured at Emory Law School, Florida State Law School, and Georgia Tech. He has conducted seminars for Auburn University , the University of Kentucky Law School, Georgia State University, Professional Education Systems, Inc., and Federal Publications. He spoke at Federal Publications' seminars across the United States for over ten consecutive years. He has spoken at the AGC National Convention and at the National Electrical Contractors Association Convention in Maui, Hawaii . His publications include Georgia Construction Law, published by Professional Education Systems, Inc. in 1986. He is also co-author of Litigation with a Surety in Construction Default: The Contractor's Bond, published by Practicing Law Institute in 1976 and Avoiding and Resolving Construction Claims and Disputes, most recently published by Federal Publications, Inc. in 2000.
In 2004, he was listed in the Top 100 Georgia Super Lawyers, Atlanta Magazine. The 2007 International Who's Who of Construction Lawyers, recognized him as one of 19 lawyers selected in Georgia. Chambers USA has listed him as one of America's Leading Business Lawyers in the area of construction law for five consecutive years. Selected by peers for inclusion as a construction lawyer in the 2007 The Best Lawyers in America. Member of the AAA Panel of Arbitrators.
